Gaming Standards Association Adopts Official Specification

6 August 2002

LAS VEGAS – (Press Release) -- Aug. 5, 2002 -- The Gaming Standards Association (GSA) recently voted to adopt the IGT SAS 6.00 protocol as an official GSA specification.

This vote clears the way for manufacturers of gaming equipment to begin implementation of the SAS 6.00 protocol in their equipment. "This is a major accomplishment for GSA," said Gregg Solomon, GSA Chairman. "It is the culmination of eight months of joint development between our member companies working through our SAS workgroup. The speed at which this was done will surely set the pace for our future standardization work."

The IGT SAS protocol allows for communication between gaming machines and slot accounting systems and provides a secure method of communicating all necessary data supplied by the gaming machine to the on-line monitoring system. Prior versions of the SAS protocol are currently supported in most gaming machine models produced by a wide range of gaming machine manufacturers worldwide.

"The SAS 6.00 protocol is unique, in that is was developed with the input of both manufacturers and regulators," said, Rich Schneider, GSA Vice Chairman. "While the GSA SAS Workgroup was developing the protocol, they took into consideration both current and proposed regulations, and received valuable input from several regulatory bodies."

One highlight of the new SAS 6.00 protocol is the authentication function which allows operators and regulators to remotely interrogate gaming machines for important memory verification information, for both the game programs, and peripheral devices. Additionally, Advanced Funds Transfer (AFT), originally released in a prior version of SAS, was enhanced to allow for bi-directional transfer of player money and promotional credits between on-line monitoring system and gaming machines.

"IGT is pleased to support GSA as the standards development organization of our industry. Last year, when IGT and GSA entered into the SAS development agreement, we made a major commitment to renew our support for GSA, and this is the first of many joint successes," said Ali Saffari, Vice President, Firmware Engineering for IGT and GSA board member. "The SAS 6.00 protocol gives the industry a solid footing for all forms of cashless gaming, which is the future of the industry."

IGT is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of microprocessor-based gaming products and software systems in all jurisdictions where gaming is legal.
