17 January 2001

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – Jan. 17, 2001 – As reported by the Associated Press: "Officials in several towns where Indian casino proposals are in the works say they're pushing ahead with the plans despite anti-gambling remarks made by Lt. Gov. Scott McCallum.

"McCallum, who would become governor if Tommy Thompson is confirmed as President-elect Bush's health and human services secretary, has vowed he won't support any casino expansion project that comes to him as governor.

"…The only plan close to receiving federal approval is the Menominee tribe's proposed $275 million casino project in Kenosha. Tribes are working on getting approval for three other casino projects in Hudson, Shullsburg and Beloit.

"..The four proposed casinos have either received local approval through a referendum or the local governments.

"…Tribal officials already are compiling information for a casino application they will send to federal officials once the proposal gets local approval.

"…The county and village already have agreed with tribal council on a casino contract…"
