Gaming In Kampala20 November 1996Tourists in Africa have recently been discovering the riches of Uganda's capital, Kampala, and its three casinos. Along with the several hotels, national parks, lakes, and rivers, gambling has helped boost the city's economy and bring about a steady flow of visitors from the surrounding countries of Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda, Zaire, and Tanzania. Kampala Casino is the largest of the three and is owned and operated by an international group with casino interests in Greece, Romania, and Hungary. It was developed two years ago from an empty shell of a building and is responsible for a flood of investment into the area of the city where it stands. The casino employs dealers trained in American roulette, blackjack, pontoon, stud poker, and the new Let It Ride table. Several progressive slots--the first seen in Uganda--make up an entire wall on the gaming floor. Lottery draws with new cars, holidays, televisions, video recorders, and cash prizes make the casino a prime night spot for locals. If you find yourself a bit heavy in the pockets coming off the gaming floor, your money would be well spent at the casino restaurant, which is famous for its international cuisine and theme nights specializing in Asian and Ugandan music and food. Business lunches serve the local community during the day. A unique city in a region known as the "Pearl of Africa," Kampala has a variety of pleasures to offer its visitors. Between the great food, the casinos, and the exoticism of Africa, it's an excellent choice for a get-away vacation. |
