Gaming Body Fears Children Will Become Gamblers

EDMONTON, Alberta – Aug. 7, 2000 – As reported by the Calgary Herald: "Children in Alberta will be allowed to play bingo for cash or prizes -- even though the province's gaming commission fears the move could turn youngsters into gamblers.

"Representatives from the gaming industry and other critics said the government is making a big mistake by allowing those under 18 to gamble when accompanied by an adult and the hosts of the event are a small group or community.

"…Murray Smith, Alberta's Gaming Minister, dismissed the criticism. `Small community and church bingo in Alberta has a long history of family attendance and participation. We want to provide a mechanism that will allow these types of organizations to maintain this tradition if they wish.'

"…It will be up to the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission to decide which small groups can be exempted from the province's current policy on minors playing bingo…"
