Gaming Ban May Be Philipine President's Last Gamble19 October 2000MANILA, Philippines – As reported by Wired News Report: "Philippine President Joseph Estrada, facing impeachment for alleged links to gambling lords, ordered the immediate closure of state facilities which run online bingo and other forms of betting. "Estrada issued the order Thursday, less than a week after he announced that the government was pulling out of all forms of gambling and would transfer the operations of the state gaming firm, Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation, to the private sector. "…He also ordered the closure of state facilities for jai alai, a handball game and Internet casino, a form of gambling where players use pre-paid cards to play high-stakes games like blackjack, baccarat and the slot machine…" |
