Gambling Tribes to Increase Contributions to Federal Regulators

WASHINGTON, D.C. –April 20, 2001 –As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: "Tribes running gambling businesses would face a small increase in fees next year to support the federal agency that regulates them, according to the Bush administration budget proposed for fiscal 2002.

"The National Indian Gaming Commission would receive $100,000 more than last year for a total budget of $7.9 million. The amount would be totally financed through fees assessed on gambling tribes, according to Kyle Nayback, commission director of congressional and public affairs.

"…Gambling tribes have clashed with the commission over its proposals for new environmental guidelines and internal control standards. Costs to meet those changes likely would come from tribes instead of the commission budget, Nayback said.

"…Indian gambling has mushroomed into a $10 billion-a-year industry, and that figure may double when tribal casinos in California open. Currently, there are 195 tribes running 309 gambling operations in 28 states…"
