Gambling Parents Plead Guilty to Child Endangerment

BETTENDORF, Iowa – As reported by the Associated Press: "The parents of two small children left in a van at a casino have pleaded guilty to child endangerment.

"Johnny David Matthews, of Rock Island, Ill., and Dana Walker, of East Moline, Ill., entered the pleas in Scott County District Court last week.

"Matthews, 32, will serve four days in jail and Walker, 37, will serve three days. Each will pay $250 in fines.

"…`They accepted responsibility for their act, which is important, and the mother indicated that she is attending parenting courses,' said Scott County Assistant Attorney Marc Gellerman.

"…The two were accused of leaving their children in the van on June 23 while they gambled at the Isle of Capris Casino in Bettendorf.

"Police reports said the temperature was near 90 when security officers for the gaming boat found the children, age 2 and 6, alone in a van inside the parking garage at the casino…"
