Gambling Organizer Faces Charges, Charities Benefit25 July 2002NEW LONDON, Wisconsin – As reported by the (Wisconsin) Post Crescent: "A 51-year-old Neenah man faces felony gambling charges, and two local charities will be enriched after police this week resolved a $7,500 Super Bowl betting pool. "Police were notified of the pool after participants who paid $75 each for one of 100 squares told them the pool organizer claimed the money had been stolen from his locker at a local factory. "…The pool organizer will be charged in Outagamie County Court this week with a felony charge of running an illegal lottery, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Carrie Schneider. "…Meanwhile, [Chief of Police Kevin]Wilkinson said, each pool participant has agreed to donate $50 to one of two local charities. "…The charities each received a $2,162.50 check from the participants this week, Wilkinson said. "…The pool was organized inside Curwood Inc., a local plastic packaging firm, and most, but not all, of the participants were Curwood employees, Wilkinson said. "…The pool would have paid up to $2,000, paying by the score each quarter, right way and wrong way, for the game between the St. Louis Rams and New England Patriots, said Lt. Rick Napralla. "Wilkinson said the case was complex and called for innovative solutions. "…But he said the resolution will send a message that gambling is illegal, even though he said its obvious that not every office pool will be prosecuted…" |
