Gambling Industry Takes Beating in Florida Legislature25 March 2002TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by the Miami Herald: "Video lottery terminals failed, casino gambling in hotels never even got a hearing, and a bill to expand the hours that card rooms operate at racetracks is likely to be vetoed by the governor. "In spite of all the money and lobbyists devoted to expanding gambling in Florida, only a few lottery-related measures passed during the legislative session that ended Friday night. "But that doesn't mean pro-gambling lawmakers are giving up on the slot-machine-style video gambling as a way of bringing revenue to the state, especially for education. "…Anti-gambling forces, however, got a boost from Gov. Jeb Bush's pronouncement earlier this month that he intended to veto anything that expands the scope of gambling in Florida. "…The only successful gambling measure passed this session was one backed by the executive branch. "A bill has been sent to Bush allowing the Florida Lottery to boost scratch-off game prizes in an effort to increase the amount of money going to education…" |
