Gambling Industry Responds To Minorities

BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI –Aug. 6, 2000 – As reported by The Mississippi Sun Herald: "Reacting to criticism that it has been excluding blacks, the gambling industry in Las Vegas, Mississippi and elsewhere is holding job fairs and business expos targeting blacks and minorities.

"About 500 minority-owned businesses networked with 55 Las Vegas companies Monday at MGM Mirage's Minority Business Expo in Las Vegas.

"…The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, meeting last month in Baltimore, voted to organize a task force to explore methods of getting more black involvement in the industry, both as employees and vendors.

"The Urban League accused Nevada-based casino companies of ignoring blacks. And Rev. Jesse Jackson, in Mississippi to investigate the hanging of a young Kokomo man, said his Rainbow Coalition would work to get union representation for black and minority casino workers.

"…Beverly Martin, executive director of the Coast Casino Association, said minority-owned businesses throughout Mississippi will be invited to set up booths at next spring's Southern Gaming Summit in Biloxi…"
