Gambling Growth Leveling Off in Montana8 November 2001MONTANA – Nov. 8, 2001 –As reported by the Montana Standard:" Taxes paid on gambling machine revenue pumped nearly $1.7 mil lion into Butte-Silver Bow's general fund budget in 2001, according to the Gaming Industry Association of Montana. "The sum represents about 13 percent of the overall budget. "…The gaming contributions vary in neighboring cities. Helena's general fund budget includes 14 percent from gambling taxes while Anaconda received about 10 per cent, according to the association. "In Deer Lodge, nearly 25 per cent of its city government budget is derived from gambling while Dillon city government got 21 percent. "The money is divvied up from the statewide total of $27.7 million in gambling machine income taxes; it's directed to local government general funds. "In addition, the state got about $13.9 million from the machines for a total of $41.6 million, the association said. "The taxes going to Butte this year represent a slight increase -- about $1,300 -- from last year's earnings. "That indicates that growth is slowing in the industry. Numbers released by the Montana Department of Justice's Gambling Control Division show that gambling grew by 2.5 percent in 2000. That is the slowest growth since the games were legalized in 1989…" |
