Gambling Game Illegal in State, Agency Rules

OKLAHOMA -- As reported by the Oklahoman: ``Thousands of electronic gambling machines being played in the state's Indian casinos are illegal, a federal gaming official told Oklahoma's tribes Friday.

``Tim Harper, Tulsa region chief for the National Indian Gaming Commission, warned Oklahoma tribes they should remove MegaNanza machines from their casinos or risk possible closure.

```All tribes operating MegaNanza and its variations should cease the operation of these games immediately,' according to a letter sent to the tribes Friday by Harper and obtained by The Oklahoman.

``If the tribes continue offering MegaNanza to customers, they risk civil fines or closure orders from the gaming commission, Harper said.

``...The gaming commission advised Multimedia in April that MegaNanza could not be classified as a bingo game, Heinen said. The commission defines MegaNanza as a Class III game, which is illegal in Oklahoma.

``Class III games are Las Vegas- style gambling such as slot machines and card games. Such gambling is permitted on American Indian land only under compacts between a state and tribe.

``Class II games, which include bingo and similar games, are legal at Oklahoma Indian casinos..."
