Gambling Expected To Fold In Hawaii Legislature

4 February 2002

HAWAII -- Feb. 2, 2002 -- As reported by KITV 4 News: ``...Two gambling bills in the Legislature do not have enough support to survive.

``The House Judiciary committee will hold a public hearing on two bills Saturday: one is to allow a gambling casino at Ko Olina, the other bill is for permission for a casino in Waikiki and another casino in Kapolei.

``Most of the house judiciary members hearing the bills tomorrow are staunch opposed to gambling.

``In fact, Judiciary chairman Eric Hamakawa has refused to schedule gambling hearings in the past because of this opposition. He expects house members will reject the gambling proposals Saturday.

``House Speaker Calvin Say wanted a hearing on gambling this year to be fair but he knew it would fail. House Republicans are united in their opposition to gambling.

``...The Senate is still considering bills to put the gambling issue to a public vote but unless those bills are scheduled for a public hearing by Feb. 15.
