Gambling Charges Dropped Against Man with Alzheimer's24 June 2002RALEIGH, North Carolina -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``Federal charges of gambling and money laundering against the father of former transportation secretary Garland B. Garrett Jr. have been dropped because of his poor health, according to a court order made public Friday. ``Prosecutors asked Chief U.S. District Court Judge Terrence W. Boyle to dismiss the charges against Garland Garrett Sr., 84, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, dementia, osteoporosis, hypertension and ulcers, the order says. ``Garrett has been living in a Wilmington nursing home since 1998. ``Last year, Garrett, his son and the family's Cape Fear Music Co. Inc. were charged in a 246-count indictment with leasing video poker machines to clubs and businesses that paid out cash winnings, which is illegal under state law, and then splitting the profits. ``...Garland B. Garrett Jr., a 62-year-old political fund-raiser and transportation secretary in former Gov. Jim Hunt's administration, also is charged with fraudulently obtaining $617,000 in federal disaster loans for the family business. ``The court order released Friday says Garland Garrett Sr.'s conditions make him mentally incompetent and therefore unable to understand the charges against him or to help his lawyers prepare a defense..." |
