Gambling Case Names Roenick

16 August 2004

PHILADELPHIA -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Jeremy Roenick of the Philadelphia Flyers says he has learned his lesson.

"He won't be gambling again soon.

"Roenick, a forward for the NHL team and one of the more accessible and media-oriented players in the sport, has been connected to an FBI investigation of a Florida firm that made millions selling betting tips to gamblers.

"Roenick was not the target of an investigation, according to the FBI. He did, though, spend upwards of $100,000 on tips through National Sports Consultants.

"Roenick, a forward who played with the Chicago Blackhawks and Phoenix Coyotes before joining the Flyers in 2001, is to earn $7 million next season.

"...Unlike the NFL, the NHL does not ban players from betting on team sports - other than hockey - or associating with gamblers.

"...Six of the firm's handicappers told a newspaper Roenick paid for tips on football and basketball..."
