Gambling Case Just Continues to Grow2 July 2003DES MOINES -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``An informant, a stronger state law and extra federal money apparently combined to launch an investigation and the arrest of several central Iowa men for illegal gambling, a newspaper reports. ``The Des Moines Register examined court records and interviewed people close to the case for a series beginning Sunday. ```The investigation just keeps expanding,’ Warren County Attorney Gary Kendell said. Alleged bettors ‘are all over the place. Everybody you talk to leads to more people.’ ``The investigation that began last fall in central Iowa resulted in charges against a high school coach, an insurance agent, a prominent business owner and a county supervisor. Authorities said millions of dollars were involved. ``...The operation allegedly was led by Robert Derryberry, 59, of Norwalk, who has described himself as a professional poker player. `` Iowa investigators say the decision to look into Derryberry was influenced by an 18-month federal grant of $300,000 last year toward targeting money-laundering crimes…” |
