Gambling Addiction Led to Rugby Star's Fall

14 May 2002

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post: "David Nelson's strongman image on the rugby pitch hid a weakness – an addiction to gambling that was to lead to his murder.

"In the two months before his death, the 38-year-old had gambled £28,000 (US$40,575) – more than his annual salary.

"…And that was his account at just one bookmaker.

"Murder hunt police were amazed at the amounts. Here was a man who had enjoyed a degree of fame on the rugby pitch, before taking up a job at the former Kirkstall Forge.

"…Friends accept it was his gambling habit which also cost him his job as manager at the Wilsons Arms – the very pub where he was blasted to death.

"…Three days before he was gunned down, he narrowly escaped death when three men confronted him in the car park of the pub. One pulled out a gun, fired and left Nelson's head creased by a bullet.

"…Det Supt Eddie Hemsley, who led the murder inquiry, believes that if they had known, the subsequent tragic events might have been different."
