Gamblers Spurred by Near Misses29 April 2003AUSTRALIA -- As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: ``'Buy yourself a lottery ticket,' is what we often say to people who have narrowly escaped disaster. ``Now a study has shown that people who narrowly miss out on a big loss while gambling go on to risk more than those who miss out on a jackpot. ``The research, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, indicates people hold misconceptions about luck. Getting problem gamblers to recognise such false beliefs is a crucial step in their treatment. ``…Another recent study found people were repeatedly caught committing offences such as drink-driving because they believed they would not be "unlucky" enough to be caught twice…" ``…Sydney University psychologist Alex Blaszczynski, who was not associated with the study, said people's concept of luck was under explored by psychologists…" |
