Gamblers Allowed to Drink on the Beach

21 November 2002

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- Casino patrons would be allowed to buy and drink alcohol in designated areas along the city's beachfront under a measure approved this week by the City Council.

The ordinance dramatically expands the city's special-events permit policy, which now allows the limited sale of alcohol. The new measure will take effect in the summer if signed by Mayor Lorenzo Langford.

Under the ordinance, casinos would be required to take out liability insurance and limit the sale of alcohol to cordoned-off sections of their beachfront, The Press of Atlantic City reported in today's editions.

The council unanimously approved the ordinance Wednesday, just months after a similar measure was defeated in another unanimous vote.
