FTC Launches Privacy Probe17 December 1999The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Thursday launched a committee that will be charged with advising the commission on matters relating to the security and access provisions that are employed, or should be employed, by commercial Web sites. The Advisory Commission on Online Access and Security was developed to help the FTC "gather a greater understanding" of the principles outlined in the "Privacy Online: A Report To Congress" which the FTC drafted in 1998, FTC spokesperson Victoria Streitfeld told Newsbytes. Two of the "fair information practices" included in the report had to do with providing consumers access to information that is collected about them on commercial Websites and guaranteeing the security of that information. The advisory committee will examine the varying ways in which commercial Websites address those concerns and will report to the FTC on what methods best protect consumers. The committee will also be charged with gauging the difficulty of and costs associated with, abiding by the FTC-approved principles, Streitfeld said. The committee will "look at all of the complications that would arise from a privacy policy that incorporated all of the fair information practices," she said. The FTC is now seeking nominations for committee members who have expertise in the area of online information practices. Reported by Newsbytes.com, www.newsbytes.com. |
