Foxwoods Resort Casino sponsors Hambletonian, Haskell Invitational races

The $1.2 million Hambletonian is one of America's oldest and most prestigious sporting events, steeped in history and tradition. It is considered the pre-eminent trotting race in the world, attracting the racing elite from the U.S., Canada and Europe. It is recognized worldwide as trotting's most prestigious race, attracting more than 100,000 fans for a week of activities at the Meadowlands. This is its 75th year.

The $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth is a Grade 1 thoroughbred event, the highest stakes race designation in North America. The Haskell annually attracts the top thoroughbreds in the country to one of the nation's most picturesque race courses.

Both races are broadcast to millions throughout North America and in selected countries overseas.

Foxwoods is owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and is located on the nation's reservation in southeastern Connecticut, about 10 miles north of Mystic, Conn.

``We are thrilled to be associated with the Hambletonian Society and its premier event, particularly on its 75th anniversary,'' said Foxwoods Chief Operating Officer Bill Sherlock. ``Both these races are a natural fit for Foxwoods. The 2000 Hambletonian Eliminations will be raced on Saturday, July 29, with the Final on Saturday, August 5. The following day, Aug. 6, the $1 million Haskell Invitational takes place at Monmouth Park, one of the top thoroughbred racetracks in North America. All three events will be broadcast separately on ESPN2, CBS and ESPN.

``These events will reflect well on Foxwoods Resort Casino and will let us entertain some of our best customers at these world-class races,'' said Bob DeSalvio, senior vice president of marketing.

Rick Hart, director of the Ultimate Race Book at Foxwoods, also sees the sponsorship as a superb complement to the Foxwoods experience. ``This really shows our commitment to the best of horse racing,'' said Hart.

``We have one of the best remote viewing facilities in the world right in Foxwoods. Now we'll be right there in the winners circle, where we belong, savoring the moment.'' Foxwoods' Ultimate Race Book is a member of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

Under the terms of the sponsorship agreement, Foxwoods will continue its sponsorship activities at both tracks, beyond these two major events and throughout the year.
