Foxwoods project faces delay

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania -- As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer: "Gov. Rendell, Mayor Nutter, or anyone else who wants to stop Foxwoods or SugarHouse from building casinos along the Delaware has to know that the casinos have state Supreme Court clearance to build on the riverfront.

"...SugarHouse already is deep into a second round of archaeological digs on its site in Fishtown/Northern Liberties. Foxwoods might be headed down the same Army Corps of Engineering-delayed route in Pennsport.

"The archaeological survey for Foxwoods found 1,133 artifacts which could indicate 'potentially significant archaeological resources dating from an important period in Philadelphia's industrial development.'

"Foxwoods spokeswoman Maureen Garrity was skeptical.

"'We don't have any prehistoric or Revolutionary War sites on the property, and anything that might be deemed historic is outside the building footprint so we don't anticipate any delays,' she said.

"...The site was not occupied until the mid-1800s, according to the survey. The presence of artifacts at each site is not expected to stand in the way of development..."
