Foxwoods Owner Wants in on Pennsylvania Track4 July 2003EASTON, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Associated Press: “An Indian tribe running a popular Connecticut casino and a county development authority would play major roles in a thoroughbred racetrack proposed for eastern Pennsylvania. “The Mashanantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, owners of Foxwoods Resort & Casino, and the Northampton County Industrial Development Authority have teamed up to win a horse racing license. It's far from a done deal, however. “First, the track must compete with numerous investment groups trying to win one of two racing licenses available from the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission. Also, the Indian tribe is seeking to run the slot machines at the track - which won't be allowed until the Legislature passes a law allowing the machines at racetracks. “…The complex, which the coalition said would be called Freedom Park, would include a 1 1/8-mile racetrack and be located on 485 acres in Palmer Township, just outside Easton. The project cannot be done without revenue from slot machines, the coalition said. “…The racetrack would create at least 800 jobs and generate more than $4 million in property tax and fees for Palmer Township each year, according to the application…” |
