Foxwoods Online Game Deemed Illegal12 August 2005CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "State regulators told Foxwoods Resort Casino officials Thursday that the casino's new online game, PlayAway, is illegal and cannot be restarted. "Foxwoods officials had obeyed a state order last month to remove the game from their Web site but said they intended to restart the game Monday after submitting information to the state Division of Special Revenue. "Paul A. Young, director of the special revenue division, said the game violates a state law that prohibits interactive online lottery games as well as the state/tribal gaming compact and the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which allows tribes to offer on their reservations only those games approved in the state. "Young also said the game might constitute Internet gambling, which is illegal under state and federal law. "…The Mashantuckets had ventured into new ground when they put the game on their casino's Web site last month, and casino managers and legal advisers must decide whether to press forward. "State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who has taken a strong stance against Internet gambling, said he is prepared to defend the ruling in court should Foxwoods resume the game. "…Foxwoods officials contended the PlayAway game was simply a way for casino patrons to determine the outcome of Keno tickets purchased at the casino…"
