Former Northwestern Football Player Sentenced to 30 Days16 March 2000As basketball fans and bettors prepared for the country's biggest college sports betting event - the NCAA's March Madness - a former football player at Northwestern University was sentenced for lying in a gambling investigation. The Associated Press reported that former Northwestern player Dwight Brown was handed a 30-day jail sentence for lying to a federal grand jury investigating gambling among athletes at the Illinois campus. Brown has never been in trouble with the law before and wasn't involved in betting on Northwestern games or in fixing games, the AP said. Prior to sentencing, the 27-year-old ex-cornerback told U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle that "this was the worst mistake of my life." Brown overcame a troubled childhood in Detroit to achieve a superb academic record at Northwestern, and has held a steady job since graduation. According to the AP, Judge Norgle said that if the federal Bureau of Prisons agrees, Brown will be allowed to serve his sentence on weekends. As part of his plea agreement, Brown admitted to lying to the grand jury in 1995 and 1998 when he denied he had ever placed bets on football and basketball games. |
