Former New Jersey Gaming Regulator Dies2 January 2002CINNAMINSON, New Jersey -- Jan. 2, 2002 -- Walter N. Read, a member of a politically connected family who was a partner is one of southern New Jersey's most prominent law firms before serving as chairman of the state Casino Control Commission, has died at 83. The Cinnaminson resident had cancer. Read, a Camden, N.J., native, served on the Casino Control Commission from 1983 through 1989. "He always made sure we got things right," commission spokeswoman Gloria Ford said. "He believed that the letter of the law should be adhered to." Before he was appointed to the commission by Gov. Thomas Kean, Read was a partner in the Haddonfield law firm then known as Archer, Greiner & Read. He also served as president of the Camden and New Jersey bar associations. |
