Former Kentucky Governor Calls for Slots Vote

KENTUCKY – As reported by Lexington Herald-Ledger: “Former Gov. Brereton C. Jones called yesterday for a constitutional amendment to allow racetracks to have slots and casino gambling.

"`Put it in the form of a constitutional amendment with a breakdown of exactly how much money goes where -- and that it has to go there,’ Jones told a sparse audience yesterday at the final session at the Thoroughbred International Exposition & Conference in Lexington.

"If limits aren't built into the constitution, `then every time the legislators come to town they can and will change’ everything from where casinos go to how much the various state entities get, he said.

"Jones, who with his wife, Libby, owns Airdrie Stud, said he thinks such an amendment is doable but difficult. Lawmakers are never going to think that the horse industry's woes are anything like the needs of schools, seniors or the poor.

"…With a casino at Churchill Downs, with the best in entertainment there for Kentucky Derby week, millions would be raised for state needs, he said. That tax money could create a coalition to lobby the General Assembly…”
