Former Illinois Official Accused of Gambling with Town's Money2 January 2003CHICAGO, Illinois – As reported by the Associated Press: "Former Cicero, Ill., Town President Betty Loren-Maltese wagered $18.8 million at casinos during the past three years, federal prosecutors say, in arguing against leniency. "Loren-Maltese and six associates were convicted in August on charges that they looted $12 million from a town insurance fund. A jury ordered Loren-Maltese to repay $3.5 million. "Loren-Maltese sought to minimize her racketeering sentence because she is the single mother of a 5-year-old adopted daughter. "…In court documents filed this week, prosecutors said the `domestic picture of Loren-Maltese's familial commitment is seriously challenged' by casino records from Illinois, Indiana and Nevada for the years 2000 through 2002. "Referring to one document that tracks Loren-Maltese's gambling, prosecutors wrote: `She gambled in the early morning, late morning, early evening, late evening; pick any hour of the day and it will probably be found in this summary chart.'…" |
