Former Gambling Council Exec Urges an Investigation of Board

PALM SPRINGS, California -- As reported by the Desert Sun: ``Terminated as executive director of the California Council on Problem Gambling, Tom Tucker on Tuesday called the state attorney general to investigate possible conflicts of interest by the council's board.

``The highly vocal Tucker said he was relieved of his job Friday following a decision by the five-member executive committee of the council's 22-person board of directors.

```We have an on-going contract dispute,' said board president Bruce Roberts. `We deny that we have fired Tom.'

``Tucker, who began volunteering at the Palm Springs-based council in 1995 and became its $60,500-a-year executive director in January of 1999, claims he was fired after raising issues of what he thought were conflicts of interest.

``…`At the Jan. 25 board meeting I said I felt there were serious issues of conflicts of interest that might affect our status as a non-profit,' Tucker said.

``Shortly after he raised the issue, Tucker said he was informed the board had decided not to extend him a new contract. Instead, the board indicated its desire to have Tucker continue to work as an at-will employee…"
