Former Best Friends Feud Over Alleged Lottery Win

4 February 2002

SCOTLAND -- Feb. 3, 2002 –As reported by the Scotland Sunday Mail: "A feud has broken out between two former best friends over claims that one cheated the other out of a £3 million (US$4.3 million) lottery win.

"George Reid, 62, is convinced Ronnie Allan, his friend of 30 years, hit the jackpot and failed to hand over a share of his massive win.

"George says his suspicions were raised when he saw Ronnie driving a sparkling new Bentley with the private registration R0N 1E.

"But Ronnie, 57, denies ever winning the cash, insists he's never owned a Bentley and is now considering legal action to stop George's allegations.

"…George, who owns a door-fitting company, says he had a verbal agreement with Ronnie to share any luck on the lottery by handing over a third of the prize.

"Ronnie, of Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, and George, of Muirend, in the city, have known each other for more than 30 years.

"…Ronnie's solicitors, McRoberts, wrote to George's solicitors, Miller Samuel, last June admitting that there had been a verbal agreement that the two men would split a lottery win.

"But McRoberts emphatically denied that there had been any such win and informed Miller Samuel that their client was now terminating that verbal agreement.

"When we spoke to George at his offices in Battlefield, Glasgow, he admitted his solicitors had written to Ronnie last year demanding a share of the money he believed he had won.

"…However he was unable to offer any conclusive proof that his friend had hit the jackpot. He said that he first became suspicious when he noticed a change in Ronnie's attitude towards him.

"…`I'm not wanting anything like half but I deserve a share. There was a definite change in his attitude towards me.'

"…[Ronnie] said he intended to contact Camelot to ask them to declare that he has not won the lottery…"
