Former Australian Gaming Watchdog Keeps Salary

Victoria's chief gaming watchdog will keep a salary of more than $170,000 a year -- despite being dumped from the position yesterday.

"Bill Lahey, who will be given a new job in the public service, was axed under a series of sweeping reforms to the state's gaming regulatory branch.

"Under the changes proposed by the Bracks Government, the Victorian Casino and Gaming Authority will be replaced by a smaller Commission for Gaming Regulation.

"And in a move that has won the approval of the Interchurch Gambling Taskforce, a full-time government officer will be appointed to hear community concerns about problem gambling.

"…Omdudsman Barry Perry -- who later likened the workings of the VCGA to `a bowl of spaghetti' -- found the payment was inappropriate.

"…But the outgoing supremo -- who did not return calls from the Herald Sun yesterday -- maintains the payment from pokies giant International Gaming Technology to the OGR was `appropriate and in the public interest'…"
