Former Australian Casino Exec Sues for $2.6 Million5 January 2001AUSTRALIA – Jan. 5, 2001 – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "Star City casino faces allegations of improper and illegal conduct involving former senior management in a case launched by a sacked executive who was accused, then cleared, of corruption. "Mr John Welch, the casino's former vice-president of human resources, was sacked in February 1996, after allegations of possible bribery and corruption were raised against him by an internal auditor. "An investigation by the Casino Surveillance Division into the allegations resulted in a report which cleared Mr Welch of any wrongdoing, although its contents are still officially secret. "Mr Welch, who says he has been unable to get full-time work since being sacked, is seeking $2.6 million in damages from the casino. "He is also fighting in the Administrative Decisions Tribunal for access to the 21-page report that cleared his name just days after he was dismissed. "…In the Supreme Court matter, Mr Welch's statement of claim alleges that he was instructed to `undertake acts of an improper and discreditable nature'. "…He says the `serious and false allegations' against him were orchestrated to effect his wrongful dismissal. "…The report also reveals that the casino's general counsel at the time, Mr David McGlinchey, was `sceptical' about the original internal auditors' report which led to Mr Welch's sacking…" |
