For Colorado's Casinos, Life's a Row Full of Cherries

COLORADO -- Jan. 26, 2001 -- As reported by Rocky Mountain News: "Colorado casinos reported a 15 percent increase in revenues for the second year in a row.

"In 2000, the state's casinos reported a record $631.8 million in revenue, up from $551.3 million in 1999, according to figures released this week by the Colorado Division of Gaming. It matches the 15 percent increase of 1999 over 1998.

"The 2000 revenue translated into $82.1 million in tax proceeds for the state.

"...About 70 percent of the revenue came from casinos in Black Hawk, and the rest came from Cripple Creek and Central City. Black Hawk's portion of the revenue last year came to $433.7 million.

"...Also, some of the chain casinos in Colorado have been marketing to bring in customers from out of state.

"...In 1992, a year after voters approved gaming, there were 75 casinos in Colorado. Today, there are 42: 19 in Black Hawk, 19 in Cripple Creek and four in Central City.

"...During the past two years, four large casinos have opened in Black Hawk, and later this year or early next year, another large casino -- the Hyatt Black Hawk Casino -- will open. The project is under construction and has formally applied for a permit for 1,350 gaming devices -- the most in the state..."
