Flyers-Rangers Pre-Season Game Called After Two Periods

21 September 2001

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Sept. 21, 2001 -- As reported by the Sports Network: " The Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers did not play the third period of their pre-season game as both the fans and players watched the President's State of the Union Address on the big screen at the First Union Center.

The start of the third period was delayed and then called off Thursday night as fans demanded to watch the President's speech to Congress instead of the game.

There was an announcement that the contest would resume and the President's speech was taken off the screen. However, the fans booed and began to chant "leave it on." The speech was then continued.

Following the speech, New York coach Ron Low and Philadelphia coach Bill Barber agreed to end the contest and the teams shook hands at center ice.

The game ended in a 2-2 tie and featured six fights and a combined 112 penalty minutes, including 96 in the first 16 minutes.
