Florida Voter Mandate May Unleash Gambling14 November 2002TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by the Associated Press: "Gov. Jeb Bush adamantly opposed expansion of gambling during his first term. But with a voter mandate to shrink class sizes, he might have to consider it, he said Wednesday. "He said he still was against any kind of new gambling as a way of raising more tax revenue, but said it might be the lesser of three evils. "…Voters approved a constitutional amendment last week calling on lawmakers to gradually cap class sizes at 18 in kindergarten through third grade, 22 in fourth through eighth grade and 25 in high school. "…But even if Bush wants lawmakers to consider some expanded form of gambling, incoming House Speaker Johnnie Byrd said the House would not be likely to go along. "…Senators talking about how to pay for reduced class sizes have mentioned allowing dog and horse tracks to install video lottery terminals as a possible revenue raiser. "…Bush has in the past threatened vetoes of any measure expanding gambling beyond the options Floridians already have, such as the Lottery, Indian reservation casinos and gambling cruise boats…" |
