Florida University Quarterback Focus of Gambling Probe20 December 2002FLORIDA—As reported by the Florida Herald Tribune: "Former quarterback Adrian McPherson is the focus of an investigation into possible illegal gambling at Florida State University, the school announced Thursday. "University Vice President John Carnaghi said in a statement that police are `investigating rumors and hearsay regarding a single, former football player, Adrian McPherson.' "McPherson, a 19-year-old FSU sophomore, was a football and basketball standout at Southeast High School in Bradenton. He was kicked off the Seminole team last month after being charged in a stolen check scheme. "Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokesman Jennie Khoen, whose department is assisting FSU campus police and the Tallahassee Police Department, said other FSU students were under investigation for possible gambling, but she confirmed that McPherson was the only student athlete involved. "…McPherson, a quarterback who started four games at FSU before being dismissed from the team, was arrested Nov. 27 and charged with misdemeanor theft and felony grand theft, which carries a maximum sentence of five years. "…McPherson, who as a Southeast High senior was the first prep athlete to be named Florida's Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball, is accused of stealing a blank check and pocketing nearly $3,500 after it was cashed…" |
