Florida Tribal Casinos Win One, Lose One23 January 2001FLORIDA-- Jan. 23, 2001 -- As reported by the Miami Herald: "A last-minute federal ruling that stopped short of giving the Seminole Tribe of Florida permission for Las Vegas-style gambling left tribal officials disappointed Monday, but not discouraged. "... It gives the tribe the authority to offer higher-stakes poker and electronic games at its casinos, but nothing more. "...The tribe is currently authorized to offer electronic pull tab and lotto machines, bingo and low-stakes poker with $10 per pot limits on winnings. The expanded guidelines would allow the tribe to offer other types of machines as well as poker tables with higher or even no limits, Shore said. "The decision is unlikely to make it past Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth, who has been fighting casino and other kinds of gambling for 20 years. Butterworth's opposition to gambling dates to 1979, when he was Broward sheriff while the tribe opened its bingo parlor on U.S. 441 in Hollywood. "...For the Seminoles, offering true casino-style gambling could make a significant financial impact at the tribe's two new Hard Rock Cafe-themed casinos, one planned for Hollywood and the other in Tampa.
