Florida Measure Rejected by Court

15 March 2002

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- A proposal that would let voters decide if Florida's horse and dog tracks can install slot machines in pari-mutuel facilities was struck down Thursday by the Florida Supreme Court.

On a 4-3 vote, the justices said the measure failed to meet the state's single subject requirement and must be removed from the ballot.

Casino proponents have gotten a constitutional amendment on the ballot three times in the last quarter century only to be defeated resoundingly on Election Day.

To make the 2002 ballot, Floridians for a Level Playing Field needed to collect nearly half a million signatures by summer.
