Florida May Probe Sheriff Dept. Major

TAMPA, Florida -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``Officials may open an internal investigation of a major in the sheriff's department who, along with four deputies, took four days to fly a new helicopter from Dallas to Tampa and made a stop at a gambling resort along the way.

``Hillsborough County sheriff Cal Henderson said Thursday he will await a review of the case by office commanders before deciding whether to investigate Maj. Rene Rodriguez's actions.

``...`Stopping at a gambling casino, whether they gambled or not (is something) that citizens don't expect us to do,' Henderson said.

``...The trip cost $2,858, sheriff's records show, plus the deputies' salaries. No deputies have been accused of spending taxpayers' money at the casino, and it's unclear if any of the five men actually gambled on the trip..."
