Florida Casino Talks Sail Into Troubled Waters18 October 2001PORT RICHEY, Florida – Oct. 18, 2001 – As reported by the St. Petersburg Times: "Before Tuesday night, City Manager Vince Lupo said he wanted to keep the city from being the `birdie in the badminton game' between two competing gambling boat interests. "But after Tuesday night's meeting at City Hall, the game may be on. "A more than two-hour special City Council meeting came to a confused and frustrated ending. And the council may have walked itself into another lawsuit from Paradise of Port Richey. "After a hearing failed because of procedure, a brief exchange Tuesday night between Paradise attorney Larry Crow and council member Phyllis Grae sparked talk of a lawsuit. "…Paradise, which has run gambling boats in the city since 1995, filed appeals with the city in August on two code violations it received earlier this year. The company also appealed the city's giving Paradise's rival, Stardancer Casino Cruises, building permits for its operation, claiming city codes hadn't been followed. "Paradise already has sued the city in Pasco County Circuit Court over Stardancer's permits…" |
