Florida Casino Opponents Unleash New Attack

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – As reported by the Orlando Sentinel: "No Casinos, the group that led the fight to kill three previous attempts to expand gambling in Florida, on Thursday unleashed its first major attack on a new plan to put slot machines in South Florida parimutuel facilities.

"While unable to compete with the fund-raising prowess of the gambling industry, No Casinos has formed a coalition with animal-rights and law-enforcement groups to battle Amendment 4 on the November general election ballot.

"If approved in a statewide election, the constitutional amendment would allow Broward and Miami-Dade counties to have local referendums on whether slot machines should be allowed in seven local dog and horse tracks and jai alai frontons.

"…Joining with No Casinos are the Florida Sheriff's Association, the Florida Police Chiefs Association, the Humane Society of the United States, Grey2KUSA and the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling.

"Florida voters have rejected casino gambling three times -- in 1978, 1986 and 1994. Gov. Jeb Bush has stymied any legislative attempt to expand gambling by promising a veto.

"Opponents say the slots measure, which is being primarily financed by South Florida dog tracks, Calder Race Course and Isle of Capri Casinos, which owns Pompano Harness Track, would carry enormous social and regulatory costs and would increase crime if it is passed…:
