Florida Casino Boat Gets City's Approval

HOLLYWOOD, Florida –Jan. 17, 2002 –As reported by the Miami Herald: "Hollywood city commissioners on Wednesday opened the way for a casino boat to dock at a hotel on the city's South Beach.

"…Thomas Driscoll, president of the Ambassador Resort and Hotel at 4000 S. Ocean Dr., made a plea to commissioners to allow him to use the casino boat to boost business in a sluggish economy.

"…Driscoll received some help from attorney Alan Koslow, who formerly represented the SunCruz gambling boat business, started by slain gambling mogul Gus Boulis.

"Koslow pitched the Ambassador's 137-foot-long, 45-foot-wide boat as an `entertainment vessel,' one that would offer not just gaming but upscale food, music and bingo.

"…The decision comes weeks after a judge ruled that the SunCruz VI had to leave its spot at Martha's Restaurant on the Intracoastal Waterway. A smaller boat would be OK, the judge ruled.

"…Late last year, when Hollywood officials learned that a new boat had docked at the Ambassador Hotel, City Attorney Dan Abbott was poised to file an injunction to block it, saying that the vessel had no business being docked at a hotel.

"This time, city officials took pains to distinguish the Ambassador boat from the SunCruz operation.

"In the SunCruz case, the boat was located in a residential area. The Ambassador is in a commercial zone…"
