Florida Attorney General Against Casino Gambling

KISSIMMEE, Florida – As reported by the Orlando Sentinel: "Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth has put his cards on the table. Not surprisingly, Butterworth said in a meeting with county commissioners that he will support Osceola County in any effort to keep out casino gambling.

"He also cautioned county leaders to trust the Seminole Tribe of Florida when it insists it does not want gambling on the 1,100-acre swath of land it bought last year near Florida's Turnpike.

"…The tribe stirred fears with its $28.7 million purchase last March. However, tribal officials have said they have no intention of putting a casino on the land, now pasture that is zoned for agricultural use.

"…Casinos have widespread opposition from Florida residents, the tourism industry and government officials.

"…Ultimately, Butterworth said, the matter boils down to legal issues. As attorney general, he has to support the laws of the state, including those that make casino gambling illegal…"
