Flint, Michigan Council Approves Casino

14 January 2003

MICHIGAN – As reported by the Flint Journal: "The City Council unanimously voted Monday to support bringing a casino to Flint.

"…The resolution asks Michigan's congressional delegation to support a land settlement former Gov. John Engler reached with the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians just before he left office last month.

"The agreement, if approved by Congress and President Bush, would allow the tribe to acquire one parcel up to 40 acres in Flint, Romulus or southern Monroe County for a casino.

",,,U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee, D-Flint, said the council's support would help the effort to get a casino, but other factors also will shape the deal's fate. Kildee said other local opinions and the position of Gov. Jennifer Granholm will weigh heavily.

"…The settlement also requires local approval, either by a governing body or through a voter referendum…"
