Five Killed in South Africa Casino Shoot-Out

7 February 2002

DURBAN, South Africa – Feb. 7, 2002 –As reported by the (South Africa) News 24: "A policeman was wounded, five suspects shot and killed and two hurt on the M25 KwaMashu off-ramp during a shoot-out with police shortly after a robbery at the Sugarmill Casino, Durban north police said on Thursday.

"Captain Len John said the shootout started when the seven armed suspects entered the Sugarmill Casino in Mount Edgecombe. They allegedly robbed the owner of R206 000 (US$18,245) before fleeing in a white Ford Bantam bakkie.

"…A shootout ensued and one policeman was shot in the foot.

"Five suspects, aged between 20 and 30, were killed instantly.

"…The wounded policeman was admitted to hospital in a stable condition.

"Police also recovered six pistols, the stolen money and the getaway vehicle. It was not yet established whether the getaway car was stolen. No one was injured during the alleged robbery at the casino…"
