First Claimant of $87.8 Million Jackpot Steps Forward

11 September 2002

TALLAHASSEE, Florida --(Press Release) --A Hallandale man, who bought his lucky Florida Lotto ticket in Pembroke Park (Broward County), today was the first to claim his share of the estimated $85 million jackpot from the Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 LOTTO drawing. Higher-than-expected sales pushed the actual jackpot to $87.8 million, third highest in Florida Lottery history.

Michel Potvin arrived at Lottery Headquarters in Tallahassee this morning to redeem his winning ticket. Mr. Potvin bought one of seven LOTTO tickets that correctly matched all six numbers for the drawing. He could have chosen to receive his prize in 30 annual installments of approximately $418,142 per year(a), but instead chose a one-time cash payment of $6,852,930.76.

Potvin used his own personal numbers in selecting his winning numbers. The winning numbers for the Sept. 7, 2002, drawing are: 10 - 16 - 22 - 29 - 36 - 41.

The winner declined to make any public comments regarding his jackpot prize. He bought his ticket at the Subco Amoco station, located at 3151 West Hallandale Beach Boulevard in Pembroke Park. The store will receive one-seventh of a $10,000 bonus from the Florida Lottery for selling a winning LOTTO jackpot ticket.

Potvin is the 68th LOTTO winner to either reside in, or purchase a winning ticket in, Broward County and the 691st LOTTO winner of at least $1 million since 1988, when the game was first introduced.

The drawing for the next LOTTO jackpot is tonight (Wednesday) for an estimated $3 million! The drawing will be broadcast live on 15 TV stations statewide at 11:00 pm EDT.
