First California Desert Casino Could Hit Jackpot

SAN BERNNARDINO, California – As reported by the San Bernardina County Sun: "While some play down a competition between a proposed Indian casino in Hesperia and one in Barstow, the first casino to open in the High Desert could reap lucrative benefits.

"The first casino will gain name recognition and will become a novelty in the bedroom communities of the High Desert, said Tom Shields, spokesman for BarWest, which is the developer for a Indian casino in Barstow.

"The first city to get a casino also will become a natural stopping point for people traveling from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, leaving the other city in the dust, he said.

"…Last week, the Hesperia city council approved an agreement with the Timbisha Shoshone tribe of Death Valley for a 300-room hotel and 115,000 square-foot casino. In June, the Barstow City Council approved an agreement with the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians from Warner Springs to build a 180-room hotel casino…"
