Filipino Government Workers Banned From Casinos

19 September 2001

PHILIPPINES – Sept. 19, 2001 –As reported by the Manila Time: "Only foreign tourists and local residents with a net annual income of 50,000 pesos ($1,000)are allowed to enter and play in casinos. Government officials and employees and members of the military and police, never.

"President Macapagal-Arroyo had to reiterate a standing government directive prohibiting officials and employees of the bureaucracy and personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police from going to casinos.

"…The President also ordered the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corp. which runs casinos to `strictly enforce' the ban on government personnel and bureaucrats.

"…While Pagcor still operates gambling casinos and lotteries, Ms Macapagal has officially shunned gambling-friendly policies. She has ordered the Pagcor not to operate jai alai despite a favorable ruling by the Supreme Court…"
