Fifteen Arrested in Pittsburgh Gambling Bust

PITTSBURGH – As reported by WTAE radio: "The reputed head of the Pittsburgh-area mob's gambling operations was among 15 people arrested by state police in connection with a betting ring that spanned three counties.

"Thomas "Sonny" Ciancutti was among those picked up Sunday night. Federal and state authorities have previously said they believe Ciancutti, 70, of New Kensington, has led the local mob's gambling ring for the last 20 years.

"…Police say Ciancutti headed a gambling network that spanned Westmoreland, Allegheny and Fayette counties.

"…Ciancutti is accused of supervising an illegal sports bookmaking business and operating video gambling devices in various locations in Allegheny County from Nov. 1, 1995, to the present.

"…The 15 suspects were arraigned in Farmington, Fayette County. All 15 were charged with criminal conspiracy and three of the 15 were also charged with pool selling and bookmaking.

"…Ciancutti was released on $50,000 bond after being arraigned on charges of criminal conspiracy, corrupt organizations, pool selling and bookmaking, dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities and gambling devices…"
