Experts: Treating Legal, Financial Woes Crucial in Treating Gambling Problems

LAS VEGAS, Nevada –– As reported by Las Vegas Review-Journal: "The immediate goal is to end the secretive behavior, the late-night treks to the video poker machines, the early morning withdrawals from ATMs.

"What appear to be peripheral symptoms -- legal troubles, financial troubles -- aren't peripheral at all.

"Treating those difficulties are central to eliminating the whole problem.

"That was the theme of a day-long seminar Friday at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which was attended by about 60 problem gambling clinicians and credit counselors.

"…`The most important thing when it comes to treating pathological gambling is money; yet, only in the last three years have we learned that money is the bottom line in treatment,' said Dr. Rena Nora, chief of psychiatry services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Las Vegas.

"…Removal of a gambler's name from bank accounts and credit cards are effective steps.

"As for troubles that often include fraud, forgery and embezzlement, a good assessment of a gambler's problems, will allow the courts to accurately evaluate a person's legal status…"
